To Grow a Nation
I saw the volume titles and the word 'allotments' collided and coincided in my head with the word 'England' of the project's title, for what is more quintessentially English than an allotment? So an allotment I have made, trying to conjure up that archetypical view often glimpsed from train journeys. From the laws I have made produce, the fruit of labour: Brussels sprouts, onions, leeks, pumpkins; pears and apples hanging from their trees; a wheelbarrow as signifier for that labour; and most important of all I have made a shed with light – all as metaphor for how a nation grows with the foundation of those laws first set out in the Magna Carta.
